The problem with being an entrepreneur is, when you spot a good idea, you just can’t turn it down, no matter how much you’ve already got on your plate. Such is the case for Bob Cannon, co-founder and president of BungoBox.

As soon as he heard about his cousin Tom Cannon’s earth-friendly idea to rent plastic, recyclable moving boxes, he was on board. "I was blown away by the concept." says Bob. "The simplicity, and the fact that it would help keep waste out of our landfills was even better."

Plus, Bob was moving at the time, and Tom prompted him to test out the boxes himself. "I fell in love with the concept even more after that." says Bob. "They are kind of like life-size legos, stackable and efficient. I thought, wow, a cardboard-free move, that could really change the landscape of the entire moving process."

And there you have it. BungoBox was launched in May 2009 and continues to rapidly expand. Part of Tom and Bob’s success might be the fact that they come from a long line of entrepreneurs. Tom’s dad has owned Central Florida Heating & Air for 30 years, and Bob’s dad has been a real estate investor for 35 years. The other factor playing a part, surely, is the cost. It’s actually cheaper to rent BungoBoxes than to buy cardboard boxes and all the supplies that come with that (packing tape, styrofoam, etc.) "It’s a no-brainer for consumers because they are saving money and at the same time being earth conscious." says Tom.

Surprisingly, until now, there really hasn’t been a good alternative to using cardboard. "We’ve been using the same environmentally unfriendly materials for the past several hundred years," says Tom. "And, unfortunately only half of the cardboard Americans use actually gets recycled. The rest gets tossed into the garbage." If it’s up to Tom and Bob, though, that will all change. "Who knows," says Bob, "Maybe 20 years from now cardboard will be a thing of the past."

There was a lot that went into us forming a company that helps moving less sucky. But mostly, we were just extremely rational (and notably awesome). Our customers save money, time, stress, and even help save the environment. Watch this video about how we started - and better yet - why we did.

Tom Cannon's Bio Image

While Tom Cannon is a Super Mario aficionado, uber tech geek and stationary bike racing champion (all amazing talents, no doubt), he is most well known for dreaming up BungoBox and giving it the mass appeal and credibility to spread across the U.S. and Canada.

It comes as no surprise that he loves hanging around the BungoBox office, a lot. Who wouldn’t? There’s a foosball table, air hockey and a well stocked fridge, after all. Plus, he works alongside jokester Bob Cannon, who also happens to be Tom’s cousin.

When it comes to running a successful business, Tom says, it all comes down to staying focused and determined, being willing to chip in anywhere at anytime and never giving up. “I remember getting chills when I found out our Edmonton, Alberta, location got a big 1,500 box order. To think that BungoBox was doing business like that so far away, and I was not there to know the customer or circumstances was surreal.”

It was kind of like seeing your children walk for the first time. Tom also has loads of experience in that department. He has three kids that inspire him in many ways, including the idea of eating french fries dipped in mayo.

Other things you didn’t know about Tom: He served in the U.S. Navy during the First Gulf war, is a UF grad and appeared on Bloomberg the Mentor.

Bob Cannon's Bio Image

More than pretty much anything, Bob loves to laugh. That explains why he’s a huge Seinfeld fan and also has a wisecrack for nearly any situation. He has also mastered the art of relating any circumstance to a song, which he will proudly play for you on YouTube or Spotify. While Bob desperately attempts to avoid the junk food in the office, he can’t. He has a soft spot for rugelach and black and white cookies.

Bob takes pride in building the BungoBox brand from the ground up, no doubt. “There’s nothing quite like creating something that completely changes an industry,” he says.

When he’s not at BungoBox headquarters, he’s perfecting on the art of chillaxing in the form of golfing, gator games and spending time with his awesome family. Bob has four children, and when he’s not playing the all-important role of super-dad, he is likely enjoying a sunset by the water or globe trotting to his favorite locales, including Paris, where he got married in 2007.

Other things you didn’t know about Bob: He graduated from UCF, appeared on Bloomberg the Mentor and he was a partner in Trycon Inc., an Orlando-based real estate investment firm, for 20 years and developed and managed more than 60 commercial shopping centers throughout the Sunshine State.
